Teams of students from schools in Shepton Mallet, Wells, Street, Bruton and Castle Cary competed in the first round of the national Youth Speaks competition organised by the Rotary organisation on Thursday 26th January at Whitstone School. Forty eight students from six local schools participated in teams of three, a chairperson, speaker and a proposer of a vote of thanks who in total spoke for ten minutes on a subject of their choice.
The intermediate competition was won by Bruton School for girls where Georgie Lewis debated the argument “Did you think you’d get away with it”. Blue School Wells were runners up having spoke on the topic “Facebook or waste of space book?”. Both schools progress to the next round in February in Bath.
The senior competition offered some of the highest standard of speech making that the organisers from the Rotary Clubs of Glastonbury, Wells, Shepton Mallet and Avalon had seen. It was won by a team from Sexey’s School Bruton. Sorrell Vince gave an amusing insight on the subject “2012 – What’s in store?” and who was ably supported by Izzie Wilson and James Hathaway. Such was the standard that three teams were promoted to the next round at Norton Hill School, Midsomer Norton on 1st March. . Sexeys School will be joined by Crispin School from Street and Bruton School for girls.
The event was generously sponsored by Mid-Somerset Series of News and Media and Living Homes, Street.
